Steam Restoration

Parkers Brook Success Story

A letter to the community surrounding Parkers Brook in Bedford, August 2007:

On behalf of Clean Nova Scotia, I would like to thank each individual living in the Parkers Brook area for all your support and interest in our restoration project on Parkers Brook. Over the past 2 months, myself and a crew of 5 Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Core have been wandering up and down the banks of your brook, cleaning up garbage, repairing damaged banks, digging pools, building rock sills, adding digger logs and helping to improve fish habitat.

Parkers Brook pre-restoration, May 2007:

The bulk of the restoration work took place in the upper reach of the brook just below Lily Lake and the large culvert that runs underneath the old twin rail line and above the marsh, so you may not have seen too much of us. That’s probably good, as we were usually covered in mud. The concentration on the upper reach was mainly due to the moving of the Parkers Brook during the construction of the old twin rail line many years ago. The brook was moved uphill away from its natural course, which resulted in an unnaturally straight run (almost like a ditch)

Parkers Brook after restoration, Aug 2007:

Because moving the brook back to its original course was not an option, we have added structures to help in the creation of a more natural run and in doing so, have helped in the creation of new fish habitat.

Once again, on behalf of Clean Nova Scotia, I would like to thank you for your interest in and support of our work.

Regards,

Andrew Hemmens
