Ship to Shore
About the Program
Clean Nova Scotia's Ship to Shore Program aims to promote environmentally friendly boating practices. Green boating practices ensure that recreational boating will remain pleasurable, with healthy blue waters and waste-free marine environments. Ship to Shore is supported by Encana Corporation and the Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps.
This summer Ship to Shore is based on the beautiful Guysborough waterfront. CNS staff will visit local areas festivals, marinas, and yacht clubs to provide education, outreach, and materials about environmentally-sustainable boating. For example, there will be free bilge sock giveaways. A bilge sock is absorbent material placed in the bilge to absorb excess fuels, ensuring that these hazardous wastes do not enter the marine environment when the bilge is pumped out.
This Season's Focus:
This season the Ship to Shore Program is focusing on black water. Black water is raw sewage that is often pumped or dumped overboard, which can then poison shellfish, damage fish stocks, degrade reefs, create unpleasant odours, and detract from the natural beauty of Nova Scotian waters. Help to stop the impact of black water on marine environments by using a holding tank and pump-out station or by using a composting toilet. See the pump-out facility closest to you on the map below.
