Clean Nova Scotia is currently accepting applications for the 2009/10 scholarship competition. The deadline to apply is January 8, 2010. The award recipient will be announced in February 2010. Please see above for the application form (PDF) and below for further details about this scholarship opportunity.
About the Award:
Clean Nova Scotia established a $20,000.00 scholarship fund in 2007/2008 in celebration of our 20th anniversary. The first scholarship was granted in spring 2009 in the amount of $2000.00. A similar scholarship will be awarded in each of the next nine years. Each award will be granted to a Nova Scotia graduate student (Masters or PhD) conducting research in the area of environmental studies (please note, for the purposes of this scholarship competition, “environmental studies” has a broad definition – see below details).
Questions and Answers:
1. How do I know if I am eligible to apply for this scholarship opportunity?
If you can answer ‘yes’ to the following two questions, then you are eligible to apply:
• Are you currently enrolled in or about to start a graduate program (Masters or PhD) at a Nova Scotia University?
• Is your graduate-level research related to (or going to be related to) environmental studies? Please note, for the purposes of this scholarship competition, “Environmental Studies” has a broad definition (see question seven for more details).
NOTE: Preference will be given to those candidates who can demonstrate in their application their intent to stay and work in Nova Scotia and/or how their research will benefit this province.
2. What is the deadline to apply for the 2009/10 scholarship competition?
The deadline to apply for the 2009/10 scholarship competition is January 8, 2010. The successful applicant in this competition will receive funding in late February, 2010.
3. How can I apply for the 2009/10 award?
Download and fill out the application form (PDF) located at the top of this webpage. Then, mail your completed application form along with supporting documents to the following address: 126 Portland Street, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, B2Y 1H8. Please send your application to the attention of Gina Patterson, Managing Director of Clean Nova Scotia.
4. In addition to my application form, what other documentation must I provide to be considered for the 2009/10 award?
• Official transcripts demonstrating your academic excellence (marks from your undergraduate degree as well as for any completed graduate work must be provided).
• Two letters of reference (academic or work-related), preferably showing how your research relates to environmental issues (see question seven for details).
• A curriculum vitae that includes details of your volunteer work as well as your environmental and community involvement.
• A short essay (about a page) answering the question: How do you envision your research positively affecting the environment in Nova Scotia? The environment in general?
5. If I am successful in my application and awarded the 2009/10 scholarship, when will I receive my money and how much will I be awarded?
The successful candidate will receive a $2000.00 scholarship in late February, 2010.
6. If I am successful in my application and awarded the 2009/10 scholarship, what are my obligations to Clean Nova Scotia?
• The award recipient must agree to donate 10 volunteer hours to a Nova Scotia-based non-profit, non-governmental organization that is dedicated to environmental stewardship during the time of the scholarship.
• Clean Nova Scotia (CNS) reserves the right to use the recipient’s name and photograph, as well as the title and abstract of the research being conducted, in all its publications and on the CNS website.
7. I am a graduate student conducting research related to the environment, but my program is not Environmental Sciences; can I apply?
Yes. Please note, for the purposes of this scholarship competition, “Environmental Studies” has a broad definition. It encompasses environmental science, engineering, management and conservation, business (economic and social impacts on the environment), as well as environment-related programmes in other disciplines. The intent of the scholarship is to support education and research in those areas in which Clean Nova Scotia seeks to effect change: climate change, energy, transportation, waste, water, air quality, environmental education and the interactions of environment and health. Therefore, if your research at the graduate level relates to any of the areas listed above, you may qualify to apply for this opportunity. If you are not sure whether or not your research is applicable, please see question 12.
8. If I receive an award this year, can I apply for another award next year?
No. The same person cannot receive an award in consecutive years. However, an award recipient may apply again after a full academic year has passed following the receipt of their first award.
9. If I apply for the award this year and am unsuccessful, can I apply again next year?
Yes.
